It’s not always easy to speak your truth. Sometimes it can be downright scary, and the thought of speaking your mind, can leave you feeling sweaty and shaky.
Whether it’s the fear of judgement from others, or disapproval from loved ones, or wanting to ‘get it right’, we can put off sharing how we reallyfeel about something or someone.
Here’s the thing, though.
By not speaking your truth, you’re not helping yourself. In fact, you’re harming yourself and your health.
And I have evidence.
Have you noticed in those moments of courage or bravery, when you’ve stood up for what’s right – for you or standing up for someone else – saying no to your boss, telling someone how much you love them, telling someone it’s not ok to speak to you so rudely, sharing how you messed up, sharing something you’ve hidden for a long time…how do you feel once you’ve done it?
Do you feel relief? Does it wash over you? Do you feel lighter? Do you feel proud? Do you feel courageous?
That’s us listening to our heart. That’s us speaking our truth ~ how it is meant to be spoken.
Even if it’s messy.
And here’s my evidence. Because I’m a nerd that likes to follow her heart (nerdy-heart follower?), I like to have science to back up what my intuition is already telling me. And I’ll share how I know, that when I speak my truth my body is physically, mentally and emotionally improving. It feels better and feels stronger.
You may, or may not know, that I use bio-feedback technology to measure my stress and health levels, and sometimes with those I work with.
I use the HeartMath Inner Balance® to see how well I feel physically, mentally and emotionally. But the device doesn’t just tell me – I have to work at it. I use breathing techniques focusing on renewing feelings such as compassion (for myself and others), to set myself up for the day (or reset throughout the day, whenever I can).
And here’s what I noticed.
I usually have a pretty good score from the feedback because I’ve been doing this work for around 5 years. I’ve been consistent and it’s supported bringing me back to health after illness.
The technology tells me my average score of ‘coherence’. This is just another way of telling you how much your body and physiology are in balance, in alignment, in flow, everything is working in sync. You don’t need to know all the science behind it (unless you want to – in which case I’m happy to explain it to you). Here’s what I want you to know about it.
My average score is usually 5.8 over 20 minutes of compassion meditation.
But when I spend time letting go of feelings, situations or events that are draining or harmful to my mental and emotional state, like guilt, or over-care or even managing anxiety or depression, and especially when I speak my truth, my coherence levels go up!
This means my body is feeling good. My physical, mental and emotional state are improving. My sleep improves. My decision making and concentration levels improve. My self-trust improves, even more. I know I have a choice!
And here’s more evidence. This is a screenshot of a portion of my results from today’s 20mins session.
It shows one of my highest scores. My average score shot up to 7.1 – no easy feat, trust me!
Because I shared something with loved ones yesterday, that I hadn’t shared in a long time.
I spoke my truth.
I didn’t realise how heavy it was, until I stopped carrying it.
I can’t control how other people now react to that information, but I know I feel better for sharing it. It was scary, I felt vulnerable and I didn’t know what would happen. But I knew I had to share my own thoughts and feelings.
Here’s more – I went to sleep at 1.30am and feel tired today. So I’m physically not at my best! But the results are still very good. So what? Well it means, I am creating more resilience for myself with each truth-telling experience. And it’s good for my body in the long run, even if I don’t feel the physical benefits, right now.
In summary, this is my evidence that when I speak my truth and let go of what is no longer useful in my life, it strengthens me physically, mentally and emotionally. It’s still not the easiest thing to do, but the rewards are priceless.
I tell you this, so you can continue to speak your truth or let go of the draining, harmful situations, feelings, events in your life.
Please keep going. No matter how scary or difficult it feels.
